Escape The Winter in Perfect PDC!

The Winter in Britain has the country in an icy grip so if, like me, you are fed up of going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark trading warily along freezing cold, ice strewn streets then do what I did - escape the winter in Puerto Del Carmen, the Lanzarote hotspot that has sun, sand, sea and much more!

Puerto Del Carmen is the main tourist centre on this holiday island but if you think that you know all about Lanzarote then prepare to think again! Yes, the town still has more than its fair share of bars and night clubs and the full english breakfast is more ubiquitous than the island’s own specialities such as the mouth watering Canarian Potatoes with freshly caught Sardines. The beaches run for miles all the way to the airport at Arrecife to the east and to Playa Blanca to the west offering the perfect opportunity to sit back and relax: the weather is beautifully hot 52 weeks a year in Lanzarite so the winter blues quickly drift away here.

The island has firmly shaken off its old tag of ’Lanza-grotty’ however and now has a plethora of activities to offer to the thrill seekers, nature lovers and culture vultures amongst us.

For an excursion with a difference I would recommend a camel ride through the stunning volcanic landscapes that dominate the island’s interior. At the end of the tour I was proud to receive a camel driving license, although I don’t know if it will come in useful for the morning commute?

Another must do trip, and one that children of all ages will especially love, is aboard Lanzarote’s very own yellow submarine! The submarine safari takes you deep into the waters that lie between Lanzarote and Africa and you will witness a stunning array of tropical fish as you glide peacefully by.

And if you want a break from the relentless beauty of Puerto Del Carmen’s beaches then why not take in a bit of culture? Yes, Lanzarote has enough culture to keep the art lovers in your family happy as well as the sun lovers. Cesar Manrique was one of the leading surrealist artists and his incredible art and sculptures can be found all across his home island. His former home has become the Cesar Manrique Foundation incorporating an incredible museum as well as one of the finest restaurants in the Canary Islands.

I loved my week in Puerto Del Carmen and I am convinced that you will too - it is the prefect holiday destination that you can enjoy all year round!
