The City of Vancouver

The City of Vancouver

During my time in Canada, I saw some great places and some great things and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I went travelling on a couple of occasions (when my bank balance allowed me) and found that to be the best thing to do, as I love travelling more than anything else. One of the highlights of my travels was the time I spent in the fantastic city of Vancouver, on Canada’s west coast.

Sitting right at the bottom edge of the beautiful province of British Columbia, Vancouver is a modern city in nearly all respects. Despite its modernity, the architecture and the look of the city do not clash with the epic landscapes surrounding it. Vancouver seems to have everything that one would want in a city.

A short drive outside of the city is the countryside of British Columbia, and that in itself is something that everyone needs to see. With mountains, forests and lush greenery all round, one could forgive the often wet and cloudy weather of Vancouver because of what it has created.

Walking around the city is a pleasure also, you won’t see any buildings that look like storage units here, with the many stunning high rise glass buildings, this is a city to rival Tokyo in its futuristic style. The streets are clean and easy to navigate. However, there does seem to be somewhat of a homeless person issue, as nearly every street has its resident hobo. This is a shame, and surely the leadership of Vancouver could do something about it.

Within the city, there are several parks in which to relax and a beautiful coastline to walk along or just to sit by and admire. One gets a sense of luxury walking along that coastline with all the expensive yachts and high rise apartments that sit on it. There are some great places to eat as well, with plenty of restaurants to cater everyone’s tastes. A strong sports following is also apparent with the NHL Vancouver Canuck’s stadium sitting right next to the BC Lion’s stadium in the heart of the city.

As mentioned earlier, Vancouver is a beautiful city with something for everyone. I could easily see myself living there or at least returning often to visit.

Gearing up for deadline day

Gearing up for deadline day

With the end of the Winter Olympics and the re-igniting of the NHL season, all the talk recently is about the upcoming trade deadline date on March the third and who will be moving where.

We have already seen a few trades but no doubt the biggest and best of them is yet to come. The Edmonton Oilers are clearly building for the future by trading Grebeshkov to the Nashville Predators for a second round draft pick. Now they must hope Nashville finish in a decent position to gain the most from that trade.

Grebeshkov has been a fairly solid defenseman all season, despite the terrible position the Oilers find themselves in. However, it seems to be all about shaking up the pack right now at Rexall Place and trying to offload some of the higher wage earners at the franchise.

With the likes of Grebeshkov on his way, players such as Steve Staios, Pisani and Horcoff must be looking over their shoulders because of their high salaries and their below average performances all season. It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, will want to take these veterans of the game.

Kovalchuk being traded to the New Jersey Devils from the Atlanta Thrashers was a huge trade for the former team. The Devils have been playing very well all season and find themselves near the top of the league, keeping the pace with the likes of Washington and San Jose. With the arrival of the create Kovalchuk, the Devil’s firepower going forward just got a massive boost and, if he starts firing like we know he can, it could just propel the Devils into the Stanley Cup series.

As the deadline date nears, it will be interesting to see who is moved around and which teams get the best of the trades. I can’t wait.

Frase Island

Frase Island

Tuesday 17th February 2008- have just got back from Fraser Island. Its the largest sand Island in the world, and its stunning. There was a group of 11 of us. They were a fantastic bunch of people, and we were really lucky as everyone got on really well. We got a 4WD vehicle, got the 10 minute ferry across to the Island, then we were off driving down the beach listening to the travelling tunes, and first stop was Lake Mackensie. This lake is paradise, its like stepping onto the set of the film ’The Beach’, pure white sand (even though its a lake), and clear turquoise waters which were so warm. It just smelt gorgeous and fresh, and we all dived in and started swimming around and playing Frisbee. It was like being in the Caribbean. We then drove inland as it all depends on the tide when you can drive on the beach and we did a scenic route around, then back onto the beach to camp for the night. Well, I have never seen so many mutant flies in my life. Everything in this country is 10 times the size of home, and these flies live everywhere on the island but are in huge monster groups near the sea. Its hilarious watching the guys have a competition to see who can kill the most, but these buggers really sting when they bite, its like a wasp sting, and we are all now covered in them along with millions of mozzie bites. We all dance around trying to wave them away as well, and we all ended up getting really aggressive screaming at them at the top of our voices, like they really understood. There are wild dingoes on the island and you have to ignore them and you can get a $3000 fine if caught feeding or interacting. They attack kids, especially this time of year as the pups are playful and learning to be dominant, so kids have been mauled to death. We saw a few, and they really are beautiful creatures, but we were told we needed a toilet partner at all times if you go in the bush, as there was a story of a woman peeing by herself, a dingo came up, scared her, so she ran off with her knickers round her ankles, fell flat on her face and got a deep bite to the arse!! So us girls always made sure we went in pairs – but hey us girls are used to that. The guys had a problem going in pairs, so proved their masculinity by going alone. Fools!! We cooked our dinner and I haven’t been camping for 20 years. It brings back childhood nightmares as I HATED camping, and that’s what we did for a few years. I hate being sandy and dirty, and not having clean cooking facilities, but this time around I didn’t care, I was having far too much fun, and we had such an awesome group of people. After dinner we got out the cheap wine called goon and sat on the beach drinking it. When the sun goes down those mutant flies disappear, then you get eaten by mozzies instead, but its fine as you can’t see them or feel them at the time. A 4WD of Canadian guys pulled up and pitched near us, so they joined us drinking and chatting, one had the guitar out, so its was all cool. The stars were fully out and everyone was in awe of the sky, and the sound of the ocean right next to us. Eventually we went to bed, and it was soooooo uncomfortable it was unreal, we had no airbeds or pillows, so we lay on top of the sleeping bags as it was too hot, and with 3 of us in a small tent it was hot. We woke up so many times with a body so stiff and aching, and we could hear the dingoes padding around our tent and sniffing by our heads. We got up at 6.30am the Monday morning, battled and danced and screamed with the flies for an hour whilst packing the van, then we drove to a campsite where there were hardly any flies to have a great fry-up brekkie, then we headed to Lake Wabby, which was a 30 minute walk, a steep climb up sand, then wow, the view was stunning. There were vast sand dunes, then lush vegetation, then the lake. It was a greenish colour as it had tea tree oil stuff in it, and we got in and it was so soft and smooth on the skin. The guys were entertaining us by having races rolling down the sand dunes into the water, and it was so chilled and relaxing. After a while we went back to driving on the beach and saw the old shipwreck ruins, and also loads of Dingoes running around. We camped in a site as we couldn’t bare to spend another night battling with the flies, even though it was so cool to wake up to the noise of the sea. Us girls set up the tents whilst the boys organised the BBQ, and dinner was served. We all sat round drinking and chatting, and freaking out as there were MAHOOSIVE spiders in the trees, and there were huge things running on the ground that we all swear were tarantulas in the dark, and Ian was a bigger girl than all of us put together. Eventually we all retired to bed, then just gone midnight it started pouring it down with rain. There was slight leakage, but nothing too bad. We were all worried that we might drown but eventually it stopped, so we had a 5.30am start in the morning as we had to drive on the beach at the correct time for the tides, so we went to Indian Head which was a lookout point up some cliffs, and we saw a shark in the waters below. Swimming in the sea is a no go as there are tons of sharks and box jellyfish in the water, and to actually see a shark in the wild was awesome. They come in really close to shore, it was madness. We then went to Eli Creek where some of them took a swim. No matter what the weather is the temperature of the water is always 15’C, so there was no way I was getting in!!! We got back to the ferry at midday and went back to Rainbow Beach where we are staying. We checked the vehicle in at the garage who gave it a once over and it was fine. We only got stuck in the sand twice on the trip. It was an amazing few days, but its so great to be showered and away from sand, and to now be able to sleep in a bed. I’m certainly no camper, a couple of days maximum is enough for me!!!

Tony’s surprise party: I think I know what we should do. Who would be up for a abrupt trip and spending a bit of cash on some italy skiing.

Arriving at Ho Chi Minh

To celebrate finishing our tertiary studies at last, my best friend and I decided to head of on a holiday overseas. For both of us it was our first time overseas, so perhaps we should have picked an ’easy’ country to visit, but after taking advantage of some flights that were too cheap to pass up, we were soon on our way to Vietnam. We were armed with our trusty Lonely Planet guidebook, as well as all sorts of advice from our well-traveled friends and family, but still we were unprepared for the sight that greeted us when we arrived. The airport at Ho Chi Minh is disturbingly quiet: it’s a place where you could just about hear the proverbial pin drop. Armed guards line the walls, and the place has a solemn air. But when we left the airport, the contrast couldn’t have been more different. The air was thick with the sounds of thousands of motorbikes, and crowds of people clamored past, talking and laughing and offering us a ’cheap’ taxi or motorbike ride. Fortunately, our hotel had booked us a taxi, so we clambered in and took in the sights as we were taken to our hotel. All of Ho Chi Minh was like this to us: it was an astounding array of amazing contrasts. The people are vibrant and friendly, and quite good at separating you from your money by offering up their wares of textiles, fruits and snacks, and slightly dodgy tour guide services. My tips for traveling around Ho Chi Minh are, simply, just take it as it comes, and enjoy the noise, the bustle, and the heat. Oh, and when it comes to crossing roads? Do so very slowly, and very carefully—the traffic will navigate around you.

How does a val d’isere ski contest sound to all of you? You guys should really put your names forward, this would be such a cool way way to spend next year!

Long Holidays

Since my move to Canada, for a long holiday, I can simply say that I have enjoyed nearly every moment. I finished University last year and decided, since I have been involved in some form of education since the age of 4, that I would treat myself to an entire year off.

That means away from everything I know, trying to seek out new experiences and simply living in a new place amongst new people and a new culture. I chose Canada because I love to travel and I love epic scenery. Other than my beloved Lake District in England, I have not seen enough of nature.

After hearing about the beauty of British Columbia I thought to myself I should go an check it out. That’s not mentioning the Yukon in the Northwest Territories and Nova Scotia. Canada offers some amazing countrysides and due to the size of the country (something I find a bit silly being European) I knew that I would have to travel around to see it all so I was satisfied on both fronts.

I have met some great people since I got to Canada and I know I will continue to meet great people. In general, people are more laid back here, and a lot more friendly. Community is a big thing here and I feel Canada is better off because of it. England and the UK as a whole could do with an injection of this great sense of community I have found.

Always polite and ready to offer help, Canadians have to be one of the biggest reasons for how positive my holiday in Canada has been and I can’t thank each of them enough.

As a fan of sports I have, unfortunately, been largely disappointed with what is on offer on the North American continent. American Football is slow, tedious and very “stop-start”. Basketball is back and forwards and doesn’t make any sense (why are the guys so ripped and yet not allowed any physical contact?) and the less said about Baseball the better. However, Hockey (now there is a sport) has been fantastic to watch. The game is fast paced and exciting and is an admirable replacement for the lack of real football.

I know I will continue to enjoy my trip and will miss this great country on my return to England. Good luck to the Canucks in the upcoming Winter Olympics!
Speaking of Canada, it has given me an excellent idea for Anny’s surprise engagement party: I think I know what we should put together. We should arrange some time at val thorens ski as a surprise.

Byron Bay – the town of sun, sea, sand and surf

Byron Bay - the town of sun, sea, sand and surf

One of my favourite ever places is Byron Bay on the East Coast of Australia. It has it all – sun, sea, sand, surf – and some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.

After a 13-hour overnight bus journey from Sydney, my friends and me arrived in the chill-out town of Byron, a real tonic for the soul. We donned our backpacks and walked to our YHA hostel which was one of the best places I stayed in, in my year’s travels. Everyone was really friendly, there were spacious balconies outside our rooms where we spent every night playing drinking games before hitting the town.

My first stop and introduction to the place was on my mission to get a nose-stud after I had lost mine, so I went to a little trinket, jewellery shop and was welcomed by the hippy stoner shop owner with his dazzling smile, huge bear hug and kiss on the cheek to ‘Welcome’ me to his town. Nice one. I liked this.

The group of us hit the beach after taking the free body boards from our hostel and took the stroll down to the beach. It was January – the height of summer, and it was beautiful! The sky was pure blue, the sun was beating down on us, and when we hit the beach we were smiling and laughing away feeling the sand between our toes, and watching the kids surfing with such amazing skill. Our mate Damo went off with his real man-sized surfboard, and us girls lay on the sand catching the rays for a while. I can’t begin to describe how lying in a bikini, feeling the heat of the sun hitting my bare skin makes me so relaxed, peaceful and happy. It’s got to be one of the best feelings in the world. We took our boards and hit the waves, pushing off and riding the currents on our stomachs, resembling clumsy turtles. It was such great fun and something I had never tried before (the beaches in England don’t have the same appeal somehow).

The nightlife in Byron Bay was fantastic. The place is so geared up for backpackers, and we hit the infamous bar ‘Cheeky Monkeys’. It was so tacky it was amazing. Hordes of travellers from all nationalities were piled into the bar, drinking cheap vodka and red bulls, dancing raucously to the music, and off course we all ended up dancing on the tables, shouting along to the tunes, annoying the doormen constantly by taking our drinks up on the tables with us, spilling vodka over our neighbours in the excitement. It was THE place to be.

Byron Bay by day is so chilled out and cute. I love the feel of small seaside towns, the friendly atmosphere, the locals accepted us as we were, instead of being annoyed by our drunken antics, and smiles were all round.

This was the town for romance, and I managed to have a date with a really cute little Australian surfer dude, which just topped it all off for me. We only stayed 4 days as we had booked the bus to go onto Surfers Paradise, and when we left we all agreed we could easily have stayed for a couple of weeks. It’s the kind of place where time stands still. There are no hassles, no worries, and walking down the streets you get caught up in the crowds watching street performers and bands, building the atmosphere up until hitting the bars, to dance the night away, then off to chill by the beach the next day.

Byron Bay will always have a special place in my heart.

Vaction planning: The plans to take a caravan along the south coast are in full swing! Although we do need to look into getting some Caravan insurance, I am appointing this to Naomi…

Escape The Winter in Perfect PDC!

Escape The Winter in Perfect PDC!

The Winter in Britain has the country in an icy grip so if, like me, you are fed up of going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark trading warily along freezing cold, ice strewn streets then do what I did – escape the winter in Puerto Del Carmen, the Lanzarote hotspot that has sun, sand, sea and much more!

Puerto Del Carmen is the main tourist centre on this holiday island but if you think that you know all about Lanzarote then prepare to think again! Yes, the town still has more than its fair share of bars and night clubs and the full english breakfast is more ubiquitous than the island’s own specialities such as the mouth watering Canarian Potatoes with freshly caught Sardines. The beaches run for miles all the way to the airport at Arrecife to the east and to Playa Blanca to the west offering the perfect opportunity to sit back and relax: the weather is beautifully hot 52 weeks a year in Lanzarite so the winter blues quickly drift away here.

The island has firmly shaken off its old tag of ’Lanza-grotty’ however and now has a plethora of activities to offer to the thrill seekers, nature lovers and culture vultures amongst us.

For an excursion with a difference I would recommend a camel ride through the stunning volcanic landscapes that dominate the island’s interior. At the end of the tour I was proud to receive a camel driving license, although I don’t know if it will come in useful for the morning commute?

Another must do trip, and one that children of all ages will especially love, is aboard Lanzarote’s very own yellow submarine! The submarine safari takes you deep into the waters that lie between Lanzarote and Africa and you will witness a stunning array of tropical fish as you glide peacefully by.

And if you want a break from the relentless beauty of Puerto Del Carmen’s beaches then why not take in a bit of culture? Yes, Lanzarote has enough culture to keep the art lovers in your family happy as well as the sun lovers. Cesar Manrique was one of the leading surrealist artists and his incredible art and sculptures can be found all across his home island. His former home has become the Cesar Manrique Foundation incorporating an incredible museum as well as one of the finest restaurants in the Canary Islands.

I loved my week in Puerto Del Carmen and I am convinced that you will too – it is the prefect holiday destination that you can enjoy all year round!

Speaking of travel, the Chalet val thorens booking is confirmed everybody, I am so looking forward to our long weekend trip together. This weekend is the cut off for the payment, please get it to me asap.
